On Monday, St. John’s Red Storm opened their season with an impressive win over Fordham, finishing strong at 92-60. This first game marked a powerful start to the second year under Coach Rick Pitino, and the team put in a solid effort, shaking off first-game jitters and delivering a confident performance.

Right from the tip-off, St. John’s played with energy and discipline. Coach Pitino’s impact was clear on the court, with the team showing sharp shooting, swift ball movement, and tight defense. They dominated the paint with 40 points and hit 54.5% of their shots, a key factor in their success. Simeon Wilcher, the team’s top scorer, had a breakout game with 17 points, shooting an impressive 7-for-9 from the field. His quick start helped calm any nerves and set the tone for the rest of the team. Kadary Richmond was also a key player, scoring 16 points and pulling down 9 rebounds, giving St. John’s a reliable presence under the hoop and helping secure crucial second-chance points.

The team moved fast and took advantage of every Fordham mistake, scoring 20 points off turnovers and grabbing 23 fast-break points. Their defense made it tough for Fordham to keep up, forcing 19 turnovers and allowing few easy shots. Jackie Johnson III did what he could for Fordham, putting up 23 points, but St. John’s kept the rest of Fordham’s offense quiet. Fordham managed just 36.4% from the field, struggling against the Red Storm’s strong defensive presence.

The Red Storm’s teamwork showed that Coach Pitino’s influence has only grown stronger in his second year, as players confidently executed plays and supported each other on both ends of the court. Even the bench delivered, adding 30 points, and showing that this St. John’s team has depth. RJ Luis Jr. added 12 points in his limited minutes, helping keep momentum when starters rested. The bench effort was key, giving Coach Pitino flexibility and fresh legs throughout the game.

This win is just the beginning, but it’s a strong sign that St. John’s is ready for the challenges ahead. Coach Pitino praised the team for their effort and focus, and fans are already excited to see how this season unfolds. If St. John’s can keep playing like this, they’ll be a tough team to beat and a real contender in the conference.
