QUEENS, N.Y. – Fresh off a 20-win campaign and its first berth to in BIG EAST Tournament semifinals since 2000 in the first season under the direction of Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Head Coach Rick Pitino, the St. John’s men’s basketball team has announced its non-conference schedule for the 2024-25 campaign on Wednesday.
St. John’s 11-game, out-of-conference schedule features a mix of local foes and national powers. The Red Storm will play its first four games at home and renew series with five opponents – Delaware, Harvard, Kansas State, New Mexico and Quinnipiac – having last faced each program 20-plus years ago. The non-conference schedule also features the team’s first trip to the Bahamas since 2016 when the Johnnies join a field with Baylor, Virginia and Tennessee at the Baha Mar Hoops Bahamas Championship before taking on Georgia at Atlantis.
The Red Storm hosts Fordham in its season opener at Carnesecca Arena on Nov. 4. Last season, St. John’s won its third-straight game against the Rams, 77-55, in Holiday Festival at Madison Square Garden on Dec. 16, 2023. Joel Soriano led the Johnnies with 20 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and three blocks. The two teams will square off in Queens for the third time in the last decade.
Five days later, St. John’s will welcome Quinnipiac to Carnesecca Arena on Nov. 9 for their second all-time meeting. The two programs last squared off on Dec. 29, 2001, with the Johnnies emerging victorious, 97-60. Marcus Hatten tallied 22 points and five steals while Anthony Glover finished with 19 points and eight rebounds in the win.
St. John’s will face Wagner on Nov. 13 in Queens before making its season debut inside Madison Square Garden against New Mexico on Nov. 17. Pitino will face his son, Lobos’ Head Coach Richard Pitino, on the sidelines for the fourth time in his career. The Red Storm’s second-year head coach secured the first two wins while with Louisville before falling in their most recent matchup in 2022 between Iona and New Mexico. The Johnnies are 3-0 against the Lobos in a series that dates back to 1965, including a 70-62 win in their last meeting on Nov. 20, 1999.
The Red Storm will face its toughest challenge when it heads to the Baha Mar Hoops Bahamas Championship at the Baha Mar Convention, Arts & Entertainment Center on Nov. 21-22. St. John’s, Baylor, Virginia and Tennessee are all led by premier head coaches, amassing four NCAA championships and more than 2,400 career victories.
The Johnnies will remain in the Bahamas to take on Georgia on Nov. 24 at The Atlantis Paradise Island Bahamas. The two teams have met just three previous times with St. John’s holding a slight 2-1 edge. St. John’s captured a 10-point victory, 66-56, against the Bulldogs in their last meeting on Dec. 9, 2009, inside The Garden. Dwight Hardy led three Johnnies in double figures with 12 points in the victory.
Upon its return from the Caribbean, the Red Storm will play its next three games at Carnesecca Arena, starting with a Nov. 30 matchup against Ivy League foe Harvard. The Johnnies and Crimson will square off for the first time since Nov. 28, 1987, when St. John’s rolled to a 105-60 triumph in Queens. The Johnnies are 3-0 against Harvard in a series that dates back to 1969.
One week later, the Red Storm will host Kansas State for the Big 12 – BIG EAST Battle on Dec. 7. St. John’s and Wildcats will meet for just the third time in a series that began in 1961. The two programs will also square off for the first time since the Johnnies secured a 72-65 win on Dec. 10, 1965. Led by first-year Head Coach Lou Carnesecca, St. John's Hall of Famers Sonny Dove and Ken McIntyre scored 27 and 22 points, respectively, in the victory over the Wildcats as part of the Sunflower Doubleheader at Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence, Kan.
St. John’s will take on Bryant for a matchup on Dec. 11 in Queens, marking just the second meeting between the two programs. The Johnnies routed the Bulldogs, 80-44, in their first contest on Dec. 23, 2009, behind an 18-point effort from DJ Kennedy.
The Johnnies will wrap up the non-conference slate before ringing in the New Year with a Dec. 28 meeting against Delaware inside Carnesecca Arena. The Red Storm and Blue Hens will square off for the first time in nearly a century. St. John’s holds a 3-0 mark against Delaware.
