Jordan Back For Saturday's Contest vs. Columbia

QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's head men's basketball coach Steve Lavin announced that freshman point guard Rysheed Jordan will be back on the court as the Red Storm meets Columbia on Saturday at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Lavin had announced on Saturday, Dec. 21, that Jordan would miss last weekend's matchup vs. Youngstown State while attending to illness of his mother, Amina Robinson, in his hometown of Philadelphia, Pa. Robinson has been under the care of medical personnel at St. Joseph's Hospital in North Philadelphia at times over the past 10 days, and Jordan, the eldest of her seven children, has been by her side. Jordan's grandfather, Richard Dunham, is also batting illness.

Said Lavin, "Rysheed was back at practice yesterday after the Christmas break and will be with us for the Columbia game on Saturday. It's been a tough stretch for Rysheed dealing with both his mother's and grandfather's illnesses. I have been impressed with Rysheed's ability to persevere through this challenging time while trying to balance his responsibilities as a student-athlete. Our players have rallied around Rysheed and have been a good support system during this difficult stretch."

Jordan, the 2013-14 BIG EAST Conference Preseason Rookie of the Year, is an explosive scorer and five-star playmaker ranked as high as the No. 3 point guard by national recruiting services. A gifted and versatile floor general rated 17th nationally in the ESPN 100, he has played in nine games with six starts, and is averaging 6.3 points and a team-leading 3.0 assists in 18.8 minutes per outing. Over his last three appearances, those numbers have surged to 10.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.0 offensive rebounds, 4.0 assists and 24.7 minutes per contest.

St. John's (8-3) and Columbia (7-5) tip-off in the first game of the 2013 BROOKLYN HOOPS Winter Festival on Saturday, Dec. 28 (2:30 p.m., FOX Sports 1), an event that also includes Kansas State vs. Tulane and VCU vs. Boston College. The appearance comes one month after St. John's Thanksgiving stint in the Barclays Center Classic (1-1).
