Red Storm Tip-Off On Friday
QUEENS, N.Y. - Head men's coach Steve Lavin, head women's coach Joe Tartamella and the Red Storm men's and women's basketball teams invite all St. John's fans to the 2013 Red Storm Tip-Off Presented by Qdoba Mexican Grill, a season-opening celebration scheduled for Friday, Oct. 25, at 6:30 p.m. at Carnesecca Arena.
ADMISSION IS FREE BUT SPACE IS LIMITED. This year's Red Storm Tip-Off is once again open to the public, with free tickets available for pickup beginning at 8:30 a.m. for students and 3:30 p.m. for non-students on Oct. 25 at the Carnesecca Arena Ticket Office. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and attendance at the event earns St. John's students +3 MVP points. The first 500 students to pick up tickets will receive a free t-shirt courtesy of RedZone and a foam finger courtesy of FOX Sports 1 once they are at the event. The first 1,000 fans through the doors will receive a light-up "Spirit Stick."
The 2013-14 men's and women's basketball teams will be introduced on Friday, and Lavin and Tartamella will address fans and preview the excitement of the upcoming season. One lucky fan will even have the opportunity to take home $30,000 by making a half-court shot during an evening of events where both teams will participate in exhibitions - with a slam dunk contest for the Red Storm men which could win another fan a free phone courtesy of MetroPCS.
A special guest performance sponsored by the Department of Athletics, Student Government Inc., and the Division of Student Affairs will wrap-up what is sure to be an outstanding evening of giveaways, performances and surprises on St. John's Queens Campus.
St. John's students can get ready for Tip-off at Johnny's Club, held at the volleyball match vs. Xavier in Taffner Field House at 5 p.m. The first 300 SJU students will receive +3 MVP points and food courtesy of Qdoba.
New to the Red Storm Tip-Off, the "Legends of St. John's Basketball Alumni Game" will open the festivities. Fans are encouraged to arrive early and cheer on Redmen and Red Storm alumni who will take to the Carnesecca Arena hardwood once again. Red and White rosters include legends such as Felipe Lopez, Tyrone Grant and Ron Stewart up-and-through more recent SJU student-athletes, like Rob Thomas and Tomas Jasiulionis. The Red Storm women will be represented by local legends Kia Wright, Sky Linsday and Tesia Harris, in addition to surprise guest alumni of both the men's and women's programs.
The event will be carried nationally on FOX Sports 1 as part of the 2013 BIG EAST Tip-Off Party. The new-look league and its network partner will provide live interviews and various look-ins on all 10 conference schools as part of the nationwide celebration of the transformed, basketball-centric league. Rob Stone, Bill Raftery and SJU alum Tarik Turner will anchor coverage from Los Angeles.
