Finalized Charleston Classic Field Announced

The finalized field for the 2012 DIRECTV Charleston Classic Presented by Foster Grant was announced on Wednesday, featuring head coach Steve Lavin's St. John's Red Storm and seven other schools.

The event is set to be held Thursday, Friday and Sunday, Nov. 15, 16 & 18, at TD Arena in Charleston, S.C. Matchups will be announced at a later time.

Murray State and Auburn are the last two additions to a group that includes St. John's, Baylor, Boston College, Charleston, Colorado and Dayton.

"In addition to the competitive BIG EAST, we will once again be playing a rigorous non-conference schedule to better prepare our team for the postseason," said Lavin. "Three games in three days at the Charleston Classic in November will allow us to learn more about the makeup of our team. Baylor returns an outstanding squad from its Elite Eight run last season, Colorado was a NCAA Tournament participant, Murray State is coming off its best season in history and Auburn participated in the 2012 NIT. The Charleston Classic field looks to be as strong as any 2012 early-season tournament and will prove to be a valuable experience for our young squad."

The 2012 Charleston Classic presented by Foster Grant, an eight-team men's college basketball tournament, will feature 12 games over the three days. Each team will compete in one game per day, advancing through a bracket-tournament format. The two teams that remain undefeated throughout will face off in a championship match. Northwestern won the 2011 tournament title. Previous winners include Clemson (2008), Miami (2009) and Georgetown (2010).

On May 17 St. John's announced its first official date and opponent for the 2012-13 season as the Red Storm will meet longtime interborough rival St. Francis of Brooklyn in the BROOKLYN HOOPS Winter Festival at the new Barclays Center on Saturday, Dec. 15.

Earlier this month ESPN announced that on Thursday, Nov. 29, the new-look Red Storm will play host to new South Carolina head coach Frank Martin and the Gamecocks as part of the second-annual SEC/BIG EAST Challenge. Tip time will be announced at a later date for the matchup at Carnesecca Arena in Queens that will be televised nationally on ESPN2/ESPNU. The rest of the Challenge matchups include Cincinnati vs. Alabama (Dec. 1), DePaul at Auburn (Nov. 30), Georgetown vs. Tennessee (Nov. 30), Marquette at Florida (Nov. 29), Notre Dame vs. Kentucky (Nov. 29), Providence vs. Mississippi State (Dec. 1), Rutgers at Mississippi (Dec. 1), Seton Hall at LSU (Nov. 29), USF vs. Georgia (Nov. 30), Syracuse at Arkansas (Nov. 30) and Villanova at Vanderbilt (Dec. 1).

The Red Storm's full schedule will be announced in the fall by the BIG EAST Conference, featuring a full slate of games on St. John's home courts - on campus at Carnesecca Arena, and at Madison Square Garden, "The World's Most Famous Arena," which has served as a home for St. John's basketball
