Six months out, much of what is planned in and around Super Bowl XLVIII has yet to be revealed, but two things are certain: the game is set to be broadcast by FOX Sports; and FOX Sports 1, America's new sports network launching on Aug. 17, is planning to televise a week's-worth of super events and programs leading up to what is sure to be the boldest and coldest Super Bowl ever.
Courtesy of FOX Sports' landmark 12-year multi-platform media rights agreement with the BIG EAST Conference beginning in 2013-14, FOX Sports 1 is carrying a spectacular SUPER SATURDAY HOOPS doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 1, featuring Marquette at St. John's (12:30 p.m.) and Michigan State vs. Georgetown (3 p.m.), live from legendary Madison Square Garden on the eve of Super Bowl XLVIII.
"Madison Square Garden will be buzzing on Super Bowl weekend when the Johnnies play host to Marquette and Georgetown meets Michigan State," said St. John's head coach Steve Lavin. "With three BIG EAST squads in action and Coach Izzo's perennially-tough Spartans, this doubleheader at The Garden will be a great showcase for our league and a terrific experience for college basketball fans."
The intriguing matchup of St. John's and Marquette has history dating back to the 1959 season. Hall of Famer Al McGuire, who played at St. John's from 1948-51, and was elected to the basketball Hall of Fame in 1992 largely for his coaching accomplishments at Marquette, where he won the 1970 NIT title and the 1977 NCAA national championship.
FOX Sports 1 is slated to televise more than 100 BIG EAST regular-season basketball games this season, plus the entire BIG EAST Men's Basketball Championship Tournament, also live from The Garden, the tournament's home since 1983, and the longest-running conference tournament played at one venue. The BIG EAST Conference now features Butler, Creighton, DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette, Providence, St. John's, Seton Hall, Villanova and Xavier beginning with the coming academic year.
"SUPER SATURDAY HOOPS is just the first of what will be a week's worth of tremendous sports events carried by FOX Sports 1, with most, like this one, originating in the New York/New Jersey area," said Eric Shanks, FOX Sports Co-President & Chief Operating Officer. "We're proud of our long-term association with the new BIG EAST, and it's through that relationship we look forward to the conference and our new channel growing together."
The 2012-13 Red Storm advanced to the Second Round of the National Invitation Tournament and finished its campaign at 17-16 (8-10 BIG EAST). St. John's 83rd winning season in history and second of The Lavin Era was its fifth since 1999-2000. The Red Storm's 2011 NCAA berth and 2013 NIT appearance under Lavin mark the first time since 2002 and 2003 that St. John's reached the postseason twice in a three-year span under one coach. The Red Storm's 63-61 March 19 NIT Opening Round win over Saint Joseph's was the first non-vacated postseason victory for St. John's since the 2001 NCAA Tournament.
